Movember and Men’s Health

November isn’t just about chilly weather and falling leaves; it’s also Men’s Health Month, aka “Movember.”

Movember shines a spotlight on men’s physical and mental well-being. This annual event encourages men worldwide to grow moustaches, and to have conversations about health issues that affect men.

👨‍⚕️ Prostate and Testicular Cancer: Movember highlights the often silent battles against prostate and testicular cancer, reminding men that regular check-ups and early detection are key.

Some of our clients have shared their stories with us, you can read Ian’s story of his testicular cancer here –
https://suttoncancersupport.org/ians-story/ and Michael’s prostate cancer story is here https://suttoncancersupport.org/michaels-story/. Both are very honest accounts.

💭 Mental Health: Movember encourages open conversations, challenging the stigma around mental health and promoting the importance of seeking help.

Your own cancer diagnosis, or that of a loved one, can take a heavy toll on your mental health.

Here are our 5 ways to look after your mental health:

Exercise – can make you sleep better, improve your concentration and help you to feel better about yourself.

Take a break – take some time specifically to look after your mental health. Do whatever works for you; watch TV, read, talk to a friend, draw, anything that helps.

Share how you feel – it is really important that you have someone to talk to, it’s great if you already have someone you trust that you can share your feelings with. If not, get in touch.

Connect with people – simply spending time with family and friends can foster a feeling of belonging, which is great for mental health.

Talk kindly to yourself – not all days will be good days, so be forgiving to yourself if you are having a bad day.

🙌 How We Can Help: We are here to support men and women that have been affected by any type of cancer. Men are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than women, but most of our clients are women. Men – we are here for you too!

About 1/3 of our clients are men, but we would like to encourage more men to come forward.

Your cancer journey is your journey, but you don’t have to walk it alone. We have complementary therapies, talking therapies and support groups that really can and do make a difference.

We have a Prostate Cancer support group that meet once a month. The group is open to men and their partners and offers a supportive environment as well as lots of information about the treatment options.

Movember is about a lot more than moustaches, it a movement that aims to break down barriers around men’s health.

If you would like more information about the support that we offer, either for yourself or for someone else, please get in touch.
