We have been collecting thoughts and memories from some of the people who have been a big part of the history of The Cancer Support Centre.
25 Years of Support – Our Story
As we celebrate 25 years of the Cancer Support Centre, we’ve been looking back at where it all began… and the journey that has brought us to where we are today.
In brief ….. What started as a small group of friends meeting in a living room in Sutton Coldfield – sharing meditation and mutual support – has grown into a charity supporting hundreds of people and families each year.
From those early days, the Centre has moved and evolved:
April 2001: one room at Good Hope Hospital
October 2001: A small house on Farthing Lane
2004: Continued success meant new premises were required and with the support of Sutton Coldfield Municipal Charities, we moved to Station House, Midland Drive.
2011 Our home on Lindridge Road. A beautiful state of the art, purpose built building, overlooking a beautiful garden and surrounded by green fields.
Each move brought new challenges, but also new opportunities to grow, reach more people, and offer more support.
Everything we do is built around our Four Pillars of Support:
Mind
Body
Spirit
Community
These guide the way we support anyone affected by cancer – recognising emotional and social wellbeing matter as well as physical health.
💬 “The NHS was treating my disease but my spirit needed life support.”
When you’ve been affected by cancer, whether through your own diagnosis or that of a loved one, it can feel overwhelming. Fear, anxiety, sadness and uncertainty are all completely natural responses. But you don’t have to face this alone.
Over the years, our services have grown to reflect this holistic approach – from 1:1 therapies and counselling, to group sessions and workshops that bring people together in a supportive community.
When the pandemic hit, everything changed overnight. We adapted quickly so we could continue to support our community.
💬 “When the Centre shut… I felt bereft and cut off… however, they continued to keep in touch… and this support was crucial.”
The Centre remained a lifeline during an incredibly difficult time.
Today, we support up to 600 clients each year .
We are here for you at any stage – whether you are newly diagnosed, in treatment, adjusting to life after cancer, or supporting a loved one.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey over the past 25 years – staff, therapists, volunteers, supporters, and clients.
Here’s to the next chapter 💙
A massive thank you to our sponsors for the evening who are all local businesses who support the work we do:
