Activity Groups – A Range of Mindful Activities

Everyone who has been affected by cancer, directly or indirectly, needs a break. Cancer can feel overwhelming and relaxing can feel impossible. A relaxing, mindful activity can be really helpful in giving an overactive mind a break.
Our activity groups are an opportunity for an hour or two of downtime once a week. A gentle activity can provide a much needed distraction from day to day life and give your mind some downtime. We have groups for: walking, Yoga, art, Tripudio and jewellery making. All are run by experienced group leaders. There is no pressure to talk, you can share as much or as little about yourself as you are comfortable with. No experience is needed for any of these groups and new members are always very warmly welcomed.
We also have a number of support groups that are for people to share their experiences and get support from their peers, again you can share as much or as little information about yourself as feels right for you.
There is more information about these groups here.
Our current activity groups are:
Art Class
A relaxing and creative way to spend Friday mornings, the art group is run by Debbie, from Look What Debbie Did. This group is all about expressing yourself and enjoying the process of creating something, without the pressure of being perfect or knowing how to draw or paint.
Debbie provides guidance and advice to help you find your own style, but ultimately, what you create is up to you. The group is a safe and welcoming space, where you can take your mind off things, and simply enjoy the therapeutic benefits of making art.
The classes run every Friday morning from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm, with a fee of £5.
The people who regularly come to the group say that it provides support and a much-needed distraction.
Clare said: “You can’t choose to have Cancer, but you can choose to paint!”
Tripudio
One of the best tools for getting back to moving following surgery or movement and balance challenges. It can also help improve to lymphatic flow and with managing lymphoedema.
Tripudio can be done standing up or sitting in a chair, making it suitable for all fitness levels. The movements are taken from physiotherapy, Pilates, yoga, Tai Chi, and dance and set to music, making it a fun and effective workout.
The ‘Flow’ routine of Tripudio was designed based on recent studies on exercise and the lymphatic system, translating Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) principles into movement. It’s a gentle form of exercise that helps avoid fatigue and overexertion of the venous system.
The benefits of Tripudio are many: it helps relieve tension, regain mobility and balance, manage lymphoedema and lipoedema symptoms, detox, improve circulation, and support the immune system. It’s suitable for all ages and fitness levels, and you work within your own ability.
Even the smallest movement is good.
The ‘Flow’ routine is learnt via a 4 week course, you can then carry it out at home to the music you enjoy, and it only takes 10 minutes to perform.
Here’s what some participants have said about Tripudio:
- “I have never used an exercise ball before, but I find it really helps me to move. After the section using the ball for the first time, I could really feel the difference in my legs and arms. It has given me the motivation to get my ball and carry on the exercises at home. I am now feeling some return of the strength and movement I thought I had lost. I am really glad I did this course.” – Alan
- “I have been so immobile for so long, it feels great to move my limbs.” – Jean
- “I have really enjoyed coming and doing the exercises. It’s nice to be out and meeting such a friendly bunch of people.” – Paul
- “I have noticed that I am sleeping better now that I am exercising more.” – Janette
Walking Group
The walking group meets every Monday at 10.30am in Sutton park for a walk and a chat. Led by John and Vicky, this friendly group is for anyone who has been affected by cancer. New members are always welcome, regardless of their ability or fitness level.
Cancer can take a significant toll on a person’s physical and emotional well-being. One of the best ways to combat this is by incorporating physical activity into your routine. Walking is a low-impact exercise that is easy to do and has numerous health benefits.
Walking with a group can help boost your morale, confidence, and overall quality of life.
The walk is suitable for all fitness levels, and participants can go at their own pace. Whether you’re a regular walker or just starting, you’ll find a warm welcome from this friendly group.
Yoga Group
Yoga is a popular form of exercise, and for good reason. It provides a range of benefits that help improve both physical and mental health. From increased flexibility and strength to reduced stress and anxiety, practicing yoga is a fantastic way to promote overall wellbeing.
We are thrilled to have our very own weekly yoga group, led by our wonderful instructor, Maria. Maria creates a warm and welcoming environment that encourages everyone to participate at their own pace, making it the perfect class for those who are new to yoga or who may not feel particularly flexible.
Many of our clients have told us how valuable the social aspect of the class is to them. After the session, they often sit down together for lunch and a chat, sharing stories and building friendships.
Lesley, who has been attending the group for several years, said, “I enjoy having an hour to myself to concentrate on my wellbeing. I like the social side of the group too; I have made friends since joining.”
Barbara, another long-time member of the group, said, “I have built friendships where we can just talk about our lives, not necessarily our illnesses, but equally it isn’t awkward to talk about what we’re going through if we want to.”
Of course, there are the physical benefits too, Jo emphasised how Maria’s instruction has helped her. “Maria knows what each of our own limitations are and helps us to compensate for them. She gives us ideas on how to complete a movement and participate with the group in our own way. She is very supportive and gentle with the routines. I try not to miss a class because the continuity has been great for my health. I really look forward to this class.”
The Yoga group is on Tuesdays at noon.
Jewellery Making
Our All Crafts Together Group is a friendly, welcoming space where you can bring along any craft you enjoy and spend a few hours chatting, sharing ideas and learning from others.
Whether you knit, crochet, sew, paint, make cards, make jewellery, scrapbook or journal, everyone is welcome. It doesn’t matter if you are an expert or a beginner, this is about enjoying a mindful activity in the company of others.
The group meets every Tuesday morning at 10:30am.
Tripudio – add Tripudio is every Tuesday morning at 11.45am.
