Supporting a Loved one who has cancer

Around 40% of our clients are not cancer patients themselves. They are people that we are helping to cope with a loved one’s diagnosis. They are Care Givers, often referred to as Carers.

Care Givers provide invaluable support to their family or friends. They often do not think of themselves as a carer, as they may be simply being there, being a listening ear, being the person who is the shoulder to cry on, being there for a hug !

They fulfil countless tasks, often going above and beyond on a daily basis.

If this is you then THANK YOU !

If you are a carer, it is vitally important that you look after yourself, caring for a loved one can be hugely rewarding, but it can also be very challenging.

If taking time for yourself is something that you’re not very good at, allow yourself to be motivated by knowing that looking after yourself will help you to look after your loved one.

Looking after yourself will help you to look after your loved one !

Group Sessions

We have a Care Givers Group that meets on the first Thursday morning of every month ?

You just turn up from 10am and the group finishes by 12 noon. You can stay for as long as you want to.

The members talk about anything and everything – from tattoos to the weather – but

The lovely Karen and Brian are there to support you, individually or as a group and answer any questions you have about the Centre and to help in any way they can. They have both been Care Givers so understand some of the challenges you are facing.

These are some of the things members have said …..

…it is a safe place to be, where you can voice concerns and worries or air the questions that are bothering you.

…Everyone understands me

…it is good to hear how others deal with situations; they often have good advice to pass on.

…we spend a good morning together simply enjoying each other’s company in a relaxed atmosphere with refreshments. Our topics of conversation are varied with no fixed agenda, which encourages the relaxed atmosphere.

…it is good to talk with others who are in a similar situation without having to explain or justify yourself. It can be empowering to realise that you are not alone.

Brian helps to run the Caregivers Group, and has shared his story with us. It is deeply touching and insightful, sharing the raw and real experience of being a caregiver.

It is his very candid, and honest story, which lays out the frustrations, challenges, and emotions of the role of looking after a loved one.
