A Gentle Christmas – 12 Ways to Pause

Christmas can be a lovely time of year, but for those of us living with cancer, caring for loved ones, grieving or facing uncertain times it can also feel overwhelming or emotionally difficult.
A Gentle Christmas – 12 Ways to Pause: is our suggestions for 12 small moments of calm, kindness and connection to support you through the festive period.
You may like to try one each day or simply choose those that feel most comforting to you.
We have suggested an affirmation for each day. An affirmation is a simple phrase you can repeat whenever you need a moment of calm.
1: Start a New Tradition
When life changes, our traditions often change too. If this Christmas feels different, it might be the perfect moment to begin something new – something small, gentle, and meaningful to you.
Affirmation
“I create space for small moments of comfort and joy.”
2: Mindful Breathing
Breathing exercises can be as simple as taking a few slow breaths to anchor yourself in the present moment. Even one minute of intentional breathing can bring some calm to a busy or emotional day.
This can also be done with a friend for a shared moment of calm.
Affirmation:
“With each breath, I return to calm.”
3: Write a Christmas card to yourself
Write a gentle message to your present self, or even your past or future self, for encouragement or comfort.
Affirmation:
“I speak to myself with kindness and compassion.”
4: Revisit an old tradition.
Revisiting something familiar can help if Christmas feels overwhelming, or changed by illness, loss, or uncertainty. It could be displaying a decoration that brings back a memory, re-reading a favourite story or watching a familiar film.
Affirmation:
“I honour what brings me comfort and connection.”
5: Do Something That Brings You Warmth.
Choose something small that brings warmth, physical or emotional. A warm bath, a cosy blanket, a favourite jumper, a comforting drink, or a phone call that lifts your spirits.
Affirmation:
“I choose moments that bring warmth to my day.”
6: Give Yourself Permission to Rest.
Whether you’re missing someone or simply exhausted, give yourself permission to pause. You don’t have to do everything. You don’t have to feel festive. We would like you to be gentle with yourself.
Affirmation:
“I allow myself to rest without guilt.”
7: Spend Time in Nature.
Take a gentle walk, visit a favourite green space, or simply sit quietly and observe the world outside. These moments of quiet connection can be surprisingly calming.
Affirmation:
“I find peace in the simple rhythm of nature.”
8: Share a Festive Memory.
Christmas memories can connect us to loved ones and to happier times. Sharing them, out loud or quietly in your own mind, can feel comforting and reassuring.
Affirmation:
“I treasure the memories that bring me comfort.”
9: A Slower Start to the Day.
Give yourself permission to begin the day slowly. Instead of rushing, take a moment to stretch, breathe, or enjoy your morning drink without hurrying.
Affirmation:
“I allow myself to begin the day with calm and kindness.”
10: Do Something You’ve Never Done Before.
Trying something new, even something very small, can add a spark to your day. It doesn’t have to be big or brave. Simply stepping out of your usual routine can be enough to lift your spirits.
Affirmation:
“I welcome small new experiences into my life.”
11: Connect with Someone.
Connection doesn’t need to be big or loud. A brief message, a short phone call, or simply sitting with someone, these small moments can mean a lot, especially at Christmas.
Affirmation:
“I welcome gentle connection into my life.”
12: Create a Small Sanctuary.
Choose a chair, a corner, or a windowsill and make it feel peaceful. Add a blanket, a candle, a photo, or something comforting. It doesn’t need to be perfect, just a place where you can pause for a moment when you need to.
Affirmation:
“I deserve a peaceful space where I can simply be.”
