February: A Month of Self-Love?

February may be when we are encouraged to think about the love we have for other people, but when do we take the time to show our minds and our bodies some love?
We have some gentle suggestions for nurturing your mind, body, and spirit. See if you can show yourself a small kindness every day.

Loving Yourself

Living with cancer or caring for someone who is living with cancer can take its toll on both physical and emotional well-being. Self-care is not a luxury—it’s essential. Even small acts of kindness towards yourself can make a difference. Whether it’s enjoying your favourite treat, taking a mindful moment to watch the birds, or simply pausing to breathe, every little bit counts.

The Power Pose & Mantras

A simple Power Pose can help send a message of confidence and power to your brain, reminding you how strong you are. It’s like channeling your inner superhero! Standing tall with hands on hips and chin up for just two minutes can change your mindset. Pairing it with a mantra like “I am strong and capable” or “I love myself” can help you feel strong, capable, and positive, even when life is challenging

Loving Your Body

Cancer can make you feel very differently about your body. It’s normal to feel that your body has let you down, but we want you to be proud of your body. Showing your body some love, by taking time to relax, eating healthily and keeping active, can make a world of difference to how you feel about it.

Try:

Aromatherapy for relaxation – essential oils like Roman Chamomile or Marjoram can ease anxiety, tension, anger and fear, helping to promote relaxation and peace and allay worries.
Self-reflection – reflect on how you view your body and why. See if you can write down three things you like about yourself and three things you appreciate about your body.

Fuel Your Body with Good Nutrition

Nourishing yourself is another powerful way to show your body some love. A well-balanced diet can support recovery, maintain strength, and boost well-being. Simple changes, like increasing fibre, drinking more water, and choosing good fat, can have long-term benefits. If you’d like to learn more, join our nutrition sessions, held on the third Thursday of each month.

Taking Time for Yourself

Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s necessary. Whether it’s breathing exercises, a gentle walk in nature, or a creative hobby, taking moments for yourself can give you a moment or two of peace. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember that even a few minutes of mindfulness or relaxation can make a difference. Importantly, know that you deserve some time for yourself.

The Benefits of Gentle Exercise

Exercise is about more than fitness—it helps with fatigue, boosts your mood, and promotes better sleep. Whether it’s a peaceful walk, a yoga session, or a gentle movement class, any activity that feels good to you is worth doing. Our walking group, Tripudio group and our yoga sessions are great ways to get started.

Connecting with Others

Cancer can be an isolating experience, but finding support can make a world of difference. Our support groups offer a safe space to share experiences, whether it’s a gentle walk, a creative activity, or simply sharing with others who understand, joining a group can boost your mental well-being and help you feel supported.

Care Givers – You Matter Too

Caring for a loved one with cancer can be emotionally and physically draining. Looking after yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential. When you take care of your own well-being, you’re in a better place to support your loved one.
Allow yourself to take a short break and to seek help from others, self-care is just as crucial for care givers as it is for those with cancer. We have a monthly support group specifically for people who are caring for a loved one that is living with cancer.
