Managing stress and anxiety after a cancer diagnosis

Receiving a cancer diagnosis can unleash many different emotions, including fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. Coping with the emotional impact of cancer can be very challenging, but there are strategies and resources that can help. Here are some of our practical tips for managing stress and anxiety after a cancer diagnosis.

1️⃣ Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy offers a holistic approach to relaxation and stress relief. Incorporating essential oils into your daily routine can help create a calming atmosphere at home. Lavender, chamomile, and frankincense are popular choices known for their soothing properties. Try adding a few drops of essential oil to a diffuser or to your bath.

2️⃣ Breathing Exercises: Box Breathing
Box breathing, also known as square breathing, is a simple yet powerful technique for reducing stress and promoting relaxation. This technique involves inhaling, holding the breath, exhaling, and then holding the breath again, each for a count of four. Repeat this pattern several times, focusing on slow, deep breaths and allowing your body to relax with each exhale. Box breathing can be practiced anywhere, anytime, making it useful for managing anxiety during difficult moments.

3️⃣ Support Groups
Connecting with others who understand what you’re going through can provide invaluable support and validation. We have support groups where you can share your experiences, concerns, and triumphs with others who are on a similar journey. Support groups offer a safe space to express your emotions, gain perspective, and receive encouragement from other people that are in a similar position and will understand. Up to date information about our support groups is here: https://suttoncancersupport.org/supporting-you/group-sessions/

4️⃣ Complementary Therapies
Complementary therapies, such as acupuncture, massage, and homeopathy, can complement traditional cancer treatments and support overall well-being. These therapies offer gentle, non-invasive approaches to managing symptoms, reducing stress, and promoting relaxation. All our new clients meet with a client advocate to agree on the most suitable therapies for them. 5️⃣ Remember You Don’t Have to Do Everything
Give yourself permission to prioritise self-care and set boundaries. You don’t have to do everything or please everyone. Listen to your body and honour your needs, whether that means taking a break, saying no to additional commitments, or asking for help when needed. Remember that self-care isn’t selfish—it’s a necessary part of healing and coping with the challenges of cancer.
Managing stress and anxiety after a cancer diagnosis is not always easy, but recognising that it is normal and acceptable to feel anxious will help and there are things you can do that will make you feel better. It make take some time to find what works best for you, so take it easy on yourself in the meantime.
Remember, you’re not alone, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
